The smell of the soil, my foot on the soil, my hands on the soil, soil was my everyday life. Walking bear foot to the creeks to wash my face before fetching a 20L of water container to be carried up the small hill of red slippery soil. My feet slipped as I slide back down and water container tied to my head falls back down onto the hill. Tears of bitterness streamed as I had to pick up the heavy weight. I have to tilt my self to place a bit higher so to support myself so I can put my foot on the silly slippery soil that just almost injured me. But then, where else will I place my feet, no concrete, no fancy wooden floor, I’m stuck with my red and black soil, both rushing to get in between the gaps in my toes. “Leave me alone, would you!” Thinking to myself. “Rubbing you off soil on the grass feels good”. But I won’t miss you for long it seems.
My dear friend soil, I wake to feel you under my feet, we battle when you become slippery, but my joy springs when you produce the most gracious potatoes, when I feel fainted with hunger. So, there you are, I am grateful of your smell, your silly slippery nature that hurt my feelings at times, yet you teach me life lessons no man can teach me, and give me survival. How could I be ungrateful. I am simply, grateful. With a bit of spit mixed with you soil, you create a paste to cover my sore so that no flies will dare touch my sores. How dare I complain about you!
Now I know why I can have a glimpse of relating to why Jesus talked about you in the parable of the soil. Unique creation, made to create memories and life. Created from soil, and all will return to soil.
Soil is about life. All human stories revolves around soil. For villagers and farmers, soil is everyday life. For urban settlers, at some point in life, soil is touchable. Soil is where everything emerge and blossoms and grows. It carries wait of humans, human’s chaos and goodness, and remains the way it is.
Thus, when Jesus talks about human’s life as the types of soils, it is amazing to reflect and view it in that scenario how different we all yet, yet all are one God’s children.
